Spring has sprung, and for many of us, thoughts turn not to love, but to our closets. More specifically, what's in our closets. We get excited about the thought of packing away the sweaters, snow boots, and fleeces, and pulling out the warm weather clothes.
Before diving in and choosing a springtime look, though, how about doing some spring cleaning? Use the change of seasons as an opportunity to prune and polish your wardrobe. We've put together a handy guide of things you should buy, things you should keep wearing, and things you should toss this spring season.
Pants and Skirts
What's trending this season for pants and skirts? Let's take a look.
This season, go shopping for trousers. We're talking tailored pants, not jeans. Channel Diane Keaton in "Annie Hall" with these wide-leg or flared, high-waisted slacks. The skirt/dress trend this spring is tail hems. A tail hem garment is something that's shorter in the front and longer in the back (the mullet of the fashion world).
Just because trousers are in style this season, it doesn't mean you have to get rid of your jeans. That includes your skinny jeans. Keep your denim for casual looks -- just make sure your jeans are in good shape with no stains, rips or tears. If you have a few A-line or pencil skirts in your closet, keep those as well. They're classics and always in style.
As with everything, if it shows signs of wear or has a stain, toss it. While you're at it, get rid of those jeggings, too. Also, even though wide-leg and flared pants are in, if yours look more like the polyester styles from the 70s, toss them. The skirt trend this season is flowy, maxi or bubble -- so if you never felt comfortable in your micro-mini, take this opportunity to toss it.
Blouses, shirts, tops and tees are the base of any great outfit. Check out what you need this season -- and what you don't.
This year's all about ruffles and feminine tops. Breezy, ladylike spring blouses look great with trousers and flared slacks, as well as fitted skirts. Look for floral and animal prints, as well as stripes. Peasant tops and tail hems are also in fashion.
Ladylike is in, but hang onto those tailored shirts -- also known as "boyfriend" shirts. They never go out of style and look great with pants or skirts for the workplace. Tunic tops, so popular the past few seasons, are also still showing up on runways, so be sure to keep those, too. They work well with skinny jeans for an informal look.
This season is all about femininity -- which means keeping yourself covered while still looking fabulous. So, toss any cleavage-baring tops, or invest in a camisole or other layering garment to wear underneath them.
No outfit is complete without a pair of fashionable shoes. Footwear tends to stay in style for quite a long time, but there are some new trends and some trends you should forget. Let's see what they are.
Platform and wedge sandals are in, as well as wedge espadrilles. Also, check out the oxford flat. Oxford flats go great with the trousers/Annie Hall trend we're seeing this spring. Plus, they're comfortable.
Hang on to your ballet flats and flat sandals, including your gladiator sandals. They're still in fashion, and work well with those long maxi dresses you bought last summer, which are also still in style.
Your Crocs. Unless you have a professional or health-related reason to wear them, we think it's time for that trend to end. If you simply must wear them, check out their new lines of more feminine and understated Croc-brand shoes.
