Make your own international fashion statement with united button covers by adding miniature flags to your favorite button-down shirt.

What You'll Need:

  • Reference books
  • Strong craft foam squares
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Permanent markers
  • Craft knife

How to Make United Button Covers:

Step 1: Look in reference books to find pictures of flags from different countries. Trace and cut out 2x1-inch rectangles from strong craft foam. Make a rectangle for each button you want to cover.

Step 2: Use permanent markers to color each button cover like a different flag. Take a pencil and mark the width of the button holes from your shirt in the middle of each button cover (on the unpainted side).

Step 3: Have an adult cut slits for the buttons on the lines you just drew. Put on your shirt, and button it. Slip the button covers over the buttons, and unite all the nations.

Fun and fanciful button cover buddies will spruce up any button-down shirt. Design one of you and one of your best friend, or create one of a dog and another of a cat. The possibilities are endless.

What You'll Need:

  • Sueded leatherette fabric (or smooth leatherette)
  • Permanent markers
  • Pencil
  • Tracing paper
  • Transfer paper
  • Scissors
  • Craft knife

How to Make Button Cover Buddies:

Step 1: Trace the Button Cover Buddies pattern as a PDF. Cut a small piece of fabric a bit larger than each pattern. Lay transfer paper between the pattern and the fabric (transfer side down). Trace pattern onto fabric.

Step 2: Color in the design with permanent markers. Make sure to test the markers on a small piece of the fabric to be sure they don't smear. You can copy our coloring, or you can make the people resemble you and your best friend.
