Meet Mr. and Mrs. Spring -- a couple of green-pepper people who'll bring a bit of springtime fun to your lunch or dinner. All their parts are completely edible, but you may be tempted to let them stay around awhile -- they're almost too cute to eat!

The following instructions are easy enough for most kids (and lots of fun!), but make sure an adult is nearby -- it's safer to let a grown-up do the cutting.

What You'll Need

  • 2 green peppers
  • Knife
  • Broccoli
  • Celery
  • Peeled potatoes
  • Green food coloring
  • Small plate
  • Green olives
  • Toothpicks
  • Bunch of fresh parsley

How to Make Mr. and Mrs. Spring

Step 1: Wash and dry the green peppers.

Step 2: Help kids with the cutting: Cut off the very tops of the peppers, and scoop out the insides.

Step 3: Cut the broccoli, celery, and potatoes into small pieces (keep potatoes in water until ready).

Step 4: Slice the green olives.

Step 5: Color the potatoes by soaking them in a small plate of green food coloring.

Step 6: For each pepper, stick a triangle-shaped piece of cut and dyed potato on the end of a toothpick and poke it into the pepper body to make a hand and an arm; repeat for other side.

Step 7: Attach 2-inch pieces of celery to the ends of toothpicks and stick them into the bottom of the pepper to make feet.

Step 8: Attach other vegetable pieces in this way to make the face: green olive slices for eyes, a broccoli-flower nose, a half-circle of green potato for the mouth, and 2 pieces of potatoes for ears.

Step 9: Fill the peppers with fresh parsley to make hair.
