Template-Free Angle Piecing

To add a square: Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on wrong side of fabric square. Following diagram, lay square on other fabric piece with right sides together. Stitch on diagonal line and cut away 1/4 inch from seam, on outer side. Press open. To add a second square, repeat steps, but with diagonal line going in opposite direction.

To add a larger piece: Lay fabric pieces with right sides together as shown in diagram. Draw diagonal line from corner to corner of square formed where top fabric covers bottom fabric. Stitch on line, cut away 1/4 inch from seam, and press open. To add a second piece, repeat steps as shown in diagram.

Bias Rectangles

  1. Cut equal-size rectangles of background fabric and contrast fabric. On right side of background fabric, mark 1/8 inch in from outside edges at top and bottom. On wrong side of contrast fabric, mark 1/8 inch in from outside edges at top and bottom. Note that the marks are opposite for right and left bias rectangles. On wrong side of contrast pieces only, draw diagonal line linking the 1/8-inch marks.

  2. With right sides together, place contrast fabric on top of background fabric. For a right bias rectangle, turn contrast rectangle counterclockwise until upper right corner is within 1/8 inch of upper left corner of background rectangle and lower left corner is within 1/8 inch of lower right corner of background. For a left bias rectangle, turn contrast rectangle clockwise until upper left corner is within 1/8 inch of upper right corner of background and lower right corner is within 1/8 inch of lower left corner of background.
