How to Make Eggplant

To make eggplant:

  1. From cream print, cut one 13/4 X 18-inch strip and one 51/2 X 23/4-inch rectangle. Cut strip into two 13/4-inch squares, one 11/2 X 3-inch rectangle, one 11/2 X 2-inch rectangle, two 1 X 31/4-inch rectangles, one 1 X 11/2-inch rectangle, and two 1-inch squares. From purple, cut one 31/2 X 18-inch strip. Cut strip into one 31/2 X 2-inch piece, one 31/4 X 41/2-inch piece, and one 11/2 X 4-inch piece.

  2. Stitch 31/2 X 2-inch purple piece to 11/2 X 2-inch cream piece along 2-inch sides. Using template-free angle piecing, stitch 1-inch cream square to upper right corner of 4 X 11/2-inch purple piece. Add 1 X 11/2-inch cream piece to right side. Join units and add 11/2 X 3-inch cream piece to left side.

  3. Using template-free angle piecing technique, stitch 13/4-inch cream squares to bottom corners of 41/2 X 31/4-inch purple piece. Stitch 1-inch cream square to upper left corner of purple piece. Add one 1 X 31/4-inch cream piece to each side.

  4. Assemble eggplant, adding 51/2 X 23/4-inch cream piece to top.

  5. Add border, following General Directions for Borders. Make eggplant top from dark green print, following Directions for Leaves and Tops.

  6. Layer front, batting, and back; baste. With white thread, hand quilt in ditches around center block and between inner and outer borders. Hand quilt lines in eggplant and diagonal grid pattern in background. See How to Quilt to stitch binding to quilt.
