To make the Casual Sophistication Quilted Place Mat Pattern:

  1. For each place mat, cut one 31/2-inch-wide strip of each mudcloth print. We will refer to these as print A and print B. From these, cut two 15-inch strips of each print. For each place mat you will need 3 strips of mudcloth. If you make 4 place mats, use 2 strips of print A and 1 of B for 2 of the place mats, then 2 strips of B and 1 of A for the other 2 place mats.

  2. From terra cotta, cut two 13/4-inch-wide strips. From these, cut four 15-inch strips and two 91/4-inch strips. Fold each in half lengthwise with right sides facing out, and press. From remaining terra cotta, cut one 181/2 X 13-inch rectangle.

  3. From black, cut three 21/2-inch-wide strips. From these, cut two 15-inch strips, four 13-inch strips, and two 181/2-inch strips.

  4. From batting, cut one 181/2 X 13-inch rectangle.

  5. Carefully matching raw edges, stitch 15-inch folded terra cotta strip to right side of print A strip along long sides, stitching both edges of folded strip. Sandwich another 15-inch folded terra cotta strip between other long side of print A strip and print B strip (with right sides together) with all raw edges aligned. Stitch. Repeat for other long edge of print B strip, another terra cotta strip, and another print A strip. To remaining raw edge of print A strip, stitch folded terra cotta strip, stitching both edges of folded strip. Press all terra cotta strips toward center. See finished quilt illustration above to make sure you are stitching strips in correct sequence.
