To make the Flag Fanfare Quilt Pattern:

  1. For center star section: Cut 20 red 2-inch squares and 16 white 31/2 X 2-inch rectangles. Draw a diagonal line corner to corner on the wrong side of 16 red squares.

  2. (Unless otherwise noted, all seam allowances are 1/4 inch and all pieces are matched right sides together. After sewing, press all seams to darkest fabric.) Lay a 2-inch red diagonal-marked square on the right side of a 31/2 X 2-inch white rectangle. Sew along diagonal and trim fabric 1/2 inch away from seam line. Make 16 pieces.

  3. Following diagram below, sew piece A to top of B. Sew piece C to top of AB. Sew piece E to bottom left of piece B and bottom of A. Sew piece D to top left of piece E and left of piece AC. Sew 4 star blocks together to make a large block.

  5. Sew together a white, red, and white 2 X 91/2-inch strip. Make 4. Sew each set to the right side of a blue 91/2 X 5-inch rectangle (piece A). Sew together a red, white, and red 2 X 181/2-inch strip. Make 4. Sew each block to bottom of piece A to create a flag. Sew buttons to blue section of flag. Sew flags around center stars block.

  6. For accent border: Cut 4 black 11/2-inch strips selvage to selvage. Measure through center vertically of flags block and cut 2 strips this measurement. Sew strips to sides of flags block. Measure through center horizontally and cut 2 strips this measurement. Sew strips to top and bottom of block.

  7. For bear paws corners: Cut 20 white 21/2-inch squares, 12 white 27/8-inch squares (cut in half diagonally), 16 white 41/2-inch squares, 4 white 47/8-inch squares (cut in half diagonally), 4 white 9 X 12-inch rectangles, 4 blue 9 X 12-inch rectangles.

  8. To make speedy triangles: Place a white and blue 9 X 12-inch rectangle right sides together. Draw a grid on rectangle of twelve 27/8-inch squares. Draw a diagonal line through each corner of every square. Sew 1/4 inch away from diagonal line, on both sides of line. Cut on all drawn lines (see diagram below). Repeat with remaining rectangles.

  12. For binding: Cut six 21/2-inch-wide strips width of fabric. Join all strips end to end. Fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and press. Measuring through center of quilt lengthwise, cut 2 strips this length. On front side of quilt, with raw edges even, stitch 1 strip to each side. After stitching, fold the binding over the seam allowance to the back. Hand stitch to back along the seam line. Next measure through the center (widthwise), and add 1 inch to this measurement. Cut 2 strips this length. On each end, fold in 1/2 inch and press. The 1/2 inch folded in will give your binding a clean finished edge. With wrong sides together press strips in half and follow same procedure as for side binding strips.
