Ribbon Art Weaving Craft

Try this ribbon art weaving craft to create textured artwork that you can hang on the wall.

What You'll Need:

  • Assorted colors of 1-inch-wide satin ribbon (about 3 yards)
  • Blunt ¬≠scissors
  • Ruler
  • Aluminum foil
  • Removable tape
  • Craft glue
  • Water
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Small dish
  • Old paintbrush

HOW TO MAKE A RIBBON ART WEAVING CRAFT:

Step 1: Cut ribbon into 9-inch strips -- you'll need five alltogether. Use remaining ribbon to cut seven 7-inch strips. Cover your work surface with a sheet of aluminum foil.

Step 2: Place the five 9-inch strips on the foil side by side, vertically.

Step 3: Starting 1 inch from the top of the strips, weave a 7-inch strip over and under each ribbon horizontally. Position the 7-inch strip so that 1 inch of each end is left unwoven.

Step 4: Repeat the weaving technique with the remaining 7-inch strips. When you are finished, you should have a 1-inch unwoven border around the edges of the ribbon rectangle.

Step 5: Remove the tape from one side, and weave each end of the ribbon back into a square. Glue in place.

Step 6: Thin about a 1/4 cup of craft glue with 1 tablespoon of water. Use an old paintbrush to coat the woven ribbon rectangle on both sides with thinned glue. Let it dry overnight.

What You'll Need:

  • Plain Chinese food cartons
  • Black felt-tip pen
  • Scissors
  • Construction paper or colored tissue paper
  • Craft glue
  • Strip of fabric or ribbon (optional)

HOW TO MAKE A CHINESE GIFT CARTON:

Step 1: If the carton has a handle, carefully pull it off of the carton. Set it aside. Draw a birthday or holiday symbol on each side of the carton. For a birthday present, you might draw a birthday cake or for Christmas, an ornament shape.

Step 2: With an adult's help, carefully cut out the shape. Paste a piece of construction paper or colored tissue paper behind the cutout window.

Step 3: Carefully place the handle back on the carton. If your carton does not have a handle, staple the fabric strip or ribbon to the carton to make a handle.
