Make this Jiggly Gelatin Lenses indoor craft and find out how eyeglass lenses work. Kids will love experimenting with jiggly gelatin in this kids' craft.

What You'll Need:

  • Water
  • Small pan
  • Pot holder
  • Measuring cup
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Package of lemon, pineapple, or other light-colored gelatin
  • Mixing spoon
  • Variety of rounded containers (ladles, ice-cream scoops, wine glasses, round-bottomed bowls, round-bowl measuring spoons)
  • Tray
  • Clear plastic wrap
  • Knife (optional)
  • Newspaper

How to Make Jiggly Gelatin Lenses:

Step 1: Boil the water on the stove. Pour the gelatin into a mixing bowl, and add 1 cup of boiling water. Stir until all the gelatin dissolves.

Step 2: Choose a variety of containers to pour the gelatin into; use containers with round, smooth bottoms to give the lenses smooth, curved surfaces. Set the containers on a tray, and fill them with the gelatin mixture.

Step 3: Put the tray into the refrigerator, and chill the gelatin for at least four hours or until fully set.

Step 4: When the gelatin is set, wet a piece of clear plastic wrap to prevent sticking. Wet your fingers, too. Run hot tap water over the outside of the containers, and, if necessary, coax the gelatin out with the tip of a warm, wet knife. Place the lenses on the plastic wrap, flat side down.

Step 5: Place the plastic wrap over a sheet of newspaper. Slide the plastic wrap slowly over the paper while looking through a lens.

Step 6: Try all the lenses on the same word, then look at some pictures. Which lenses make the words look bigger? Which make them look wiggly? Why do different lenses make the same thing look different?

If you'd like to do some more exploring about lenses, check out some books from your school or local library.
