In this easy beach craft, your kids will create a miniature clamshell garden using seeds or a cactus. You can find clams on the beach -- or at a local fish market.

What You'll Need:

  • Clam half-shell
  • Small cactus
  • Craft glue
  • Sand
  • Small pebbles (no larger than 1/8-inch in diameter)
  • Moss
  • Potting soil
  • Seeds

How to Make a Clamshell Garden:Cactus GardenStep 1: Place a tiny variety of cactus inside the clamshell, using a small amount of glue to hold it in place. Step 2: Fill the shell with a mixture of half sand and half a combination of tiny pebbles and moss. Dampen and place in a sunny spot. Step 3: Your garden should be watered once a week. Be careful not to over water it.

Seed Garden

Step 1: Sprinkle tiny pebbles along the bottom of the clamshell, followed by a half-inch of potting soil. Spread moss on top.

Step 2: Dampen and sprinkle on some seeds (grass seeds work well, or you can try alfalfa, clover, mustard seed, radish, or rye).

Step 3: Layer more soil over seeds and moss. Water lightly and keep it in a dark place until the seeds sprout, then move it to a sunny spot.

Seaweed comes in lots of interesting shapes and textures. You can preserve them by making seaweed art. It's easy to make seaweed prints with this easy beach craft for kids.

What You'll Need:

  • Fresh seaweed (available at fish supply stores)
  • Poster board
  • Craft glue
  • Decorations

How to Make Seaweed Art:

Step 1: Lay fresh seaweed on a piece of poster board. Arrange it in a nice design, then let the seaweed dry. Seaweed contains a glue-like substance that will cause it to stick to the poster board.

Step 2: When the seaweed is dry, check to make sure it's all stuck to the poster board. If there are loose bits of seaweed, just use a little glue to stick them down.

Step 3: If you like, you can paint your creation or decorate it with other things you find at a beach -- like shells or pebbles.
