How to Make Christmas Clothing


Christmas Vests
Celebrate the Christmas season by wearing your heart on your sleeve ... or in this case, vest. Christmas vests are fun to wear and a great way to show your festive spirit. Give these Christmas crafts as Christmas gifts or keep them all for yourself.

Angelic Vest

Angelic Vest

You'll Need:
  • Linen vest
  • Fabric glue
  • Straight pins
  • 11/4 yards ecru ungathered cluney lace, 1 inch wide
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • 11/2 yards ivory cording, 1/2 inch wide
  • 5 x 5-inch square antique linen
  • 4-inch ecru Irish rose doily
  • 8 ivory ribbon roses, 1 inch each
  • 12 inches dusty rose French ribbon
  • Thin wire
  • Scissors
  • 1 yard moss sheer ribbon
  • Needle and ivory thread
  • 5 x 3-inch piece antique lace
  • Assorted charms, including angels
  • 50 miscellaneous buttons
To Make Angelic Vest:
  1. Using fabric glue and straight pins to hold, glue cluney lace around neck and front edge of vest. Use a few drops of hot glue to hold cording into position (see photo for placement), lift up section of cording and glue with fabric glue. Make sure all edges are secured.

  2. Using fabric glue, attach linen for pocket and doily to vest. Fabric glue ivory ribbon roses on top of cluney lace. Let dry 24 hours.

  3. To make a large ribbon rose, roll French ribbon up in a loose roll and wrap wire around bottom end. To make a 2-loop bow, cut two 5-inch pieces of sheer ribbon. Pinch in center and fold tails in; wrap wire around center. Using a 10-inch piece of sheer ribbon repeat the same process. Sew bows to vest. Sew large ribbon rose to large sheer bow. Glue to vest with fabric glue.

  4. Pinch bottom of antique lace and sew to vest. Sew angel charm over bottom of lace. Using hot glue put a drop of glue on buttons and position them. Put a drop of hot glue on charms and position them. Hand sew all buttons and charms to vest. Reinforce any loose areas with fabric glue. Let dry.

Happy Holiday Vest

You'll Need:
  • 11/2 x 22-inch strip each red and gold print fabrics
  • 9 x 14-inches each green print and off-white print fabrics
  • 14 x 151/2-inch beige print
  • 10 x 11-inch green print
  • 9 x 14-inch gold print
  • 14 x 141/2-inch blue print
  • 1/2 yard fusible webbing
  • Appliqute fabrics: 8 x 8-inch white on white, 7 x 7-inch red print, 4 x 4-inch red print, 7 x  7-inch green print, 2 x 2-inch brown solid, 2 x 2-inch yellow print, 2 x 2-inch black, 4 x 4-inch gold print, 3 x 3-inch brown print
  • Thread: white, black, brown, yellow, dark gold
  • 11/2 yards lining and back fabric
  • Your favorite vest pattern
  • 7 black seed beads
  • 3 buttons, 3/4 inch each
  • 6 buttons, various colors and sizes
To Make Happy Holiday Vest:
  1. Download Happy Holiday Vest pattern here. Print it out.

  2. To make checked piece: Stitch 11/2-inch strip red print to 11/2-inch strip gold print along 22-inch length. Cut into 11/2-inch-wide sections. Cut 14 sections. Stitch sections together, alternating colors to form checked piece.

  3. To make pinwheel section: Cut 14 triangles (see pattern) each of green print and off-white print fabric (dashed line is stiching line). Stitch a green triangle to an off-white triangle on the diagonal side to form a square. Repeat for all triangles.

  4. Stitch 4 squares together to create a pinwheel. Stitch pinwheel blocks together to make a row.

  5. To make vest front: Stitch checked piece to top of 14 x 151/2-inch beige print.

  6. Stitch 10 x 11-inch green print to top of checked piece, lining up pieces along right edge. Cut out right front of vest.

  7. To make left front: Stitch pinwheel section to top of 9 x 14-inch gold print.

  8. Stitch 14 x 141/2-inch blue print to top of pinwheel section, lining up pieces along left edge. Cut out left front of vest.

  9. To make appliques: Following manufacturer's directions, iron fusible webbing to back of all applique fabrics. Trace applique patterns onto the paper and cut out all pieces.

  10.  Peel off paper back from all pieces and press on vest fronts, following finished photo.

  11. Using blanket stitch on sewing machine, applique all pieces on vest fronts. Use thread colors as follows: black for tree, mitten, hat, house; white for mitten cuff, snowman, snow; yellow for window; brown for door, trunk; and gold for star, scarf. Knot all threads on back of fabric.

  12. Cut out remaining vest pieces and assemble vest following pattern directions.

  13. Stitch beads to snowman for eyes, nose, and mouth. Stitch buttons to snowman, star, and door at Xs.
