Christmas Knit Mittens and Booties
Mittens are welcome gifts during the middle of winter. Booties warm little feet. Knit Christmas gifts that your friends and family will want to wear all winter long. If you need a little refresher, we include the basic knitting abbreviations at the bottom of this page. Even if you're not a knitter, you can still create Christmas mittens that make wonderful Christmas gifts.

No-Knit Mittens

No-Knit Mittens are knitted mittens. Make this Christmas craft as a Christmas gift for loved ones.

No-Knit Mittens

You'll Need:
  • Old sweater with sleeves: wool, cotton, or blend
  • Scissors
  • Black permanent marker
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
To Make No-Knit Mittens:
  1. Wash sweater in warm water, and dry in dryer on medium heat.

  2. Cut sleeves off sweater, and turn them inside out.

  3. Lay your hand on sweater sleeve so your wrist is at sleeve cuff and sleeve seam runs along the outer edge of your hand. Use marker to trace mitten shape, beginning at top of outer seam and coming down and around thumb. Repeat for other sleeve.

  4. Use sewing machine to stitch mittens along marker line. Trim mittens outside sewn seam, and turn inside out.

Winter Warmth Felted Mittens

Winter Warmth Felted Mittens

You'll Need:
  • 220 yards medium-weight 100% wool yarn (not superwash; this type of wool will not felt)
  • 1 skein fuzzy 100% polyester yarn (50 grams)
  • Set of 5 double-pointed needles, U.S. size 8
  • Stitch markers
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scrap yarn
To Make Winter Warmth Felted Mittens:
  1. Holding both yarns tog, CO 44 sts. Divide sts equally onto 4 needles (11 sts on each needle).

    With rem needle, join sts into rnd, being careful not to twist, and pm at beg of rnd. K in rnd until work measures 31/2 inches from CO edge.

  2. Cut fuzzy yarn, leaving 5-inch tail. Thread tail on tapestry needle, and weave to WS. Cont with wool yarn:

    Rnd 1: [k5, m1] 8 times, k4 (52 sts)
    Rnds 2-11: k all sts
    Rnd 12: k2, pm, m1, k2, m1, pm, k to end of rnd (54 sts)
    Rnd 13: k 1 rnd
    Rnd 14: k to first marker, sl marker, m1, k to next marker, m1, sl marker, k to end of rnd (56 sts)
    Rep last 2 rnds 5 times (66 sts)
    Rnd 25: k all sts
    Rnd 26: k to first marker. Sl 16 sts between markers onto scrap yarn, and tie ends tog to hold sts. With yarn from skein, make 2 backward loops over needle used to beg rnd; k to end of rnd (52 sts). K in rnds until work measures 11 inches from cuff.

  3. To shape top of mitten:

    Rnd 1: [k2, k2tog] 13 times (39 sts)
    Rnds 2-5: k all sts
    Rnd 6: [k1, k2tog] 13 times (26 sts)
    Rnds 7-10: k all sts
    Rnd 11: [k2tog] 13 times (13 sts)
    Rnd 12: k all sts

    Cut yarn, leaving 5-inch tail. Thread tail on tapestry needle, and insert through 13 sts on needles. Pull yarn gently to close mitten top. Turn inside out, and weave through several sts.

  4. To make thumb, insert empty needle into first 8 sts on hold (tied on scrap yarn). Sl rem 8 sts on hold to second needle. Join yarn from skein at beg of second needle; pm to mark beg of rnd. With third needle, k8 from second needle, pick up 2 sts from k edge above thumb, k8 from first needle (18 sts). Divide sts so each needle has 6 sts. K in rnds until work measure 21/4 inches.

  5. To shape thumb top:
    Rnd 1: [k2, k2tog] 4 times, end last 2 sts as k2tog (12 sts)
    Rnds 2-3: k all sts
    Rnd 4: [k1, k2tog] 4 times (8 sts)
    Rnd 5: k all sts

    Cut yarn, leaving 5-inch tail. Thread on tapestry needle, and insert through 8 sts on needles. Pull yarn gently to close mitten top. Turn inside out, and weave through several sts. Rep steps to make matching mitten.

  • 100 yards medium-weight wool yarn (110 yards/50 grams)
  • U.S. size 5 knitting needles
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Red-and-white ribbon or white yarn
To Make Snuggly Santa Baby Booties:

Gauge: 24 sts/48 rows=4 inches in garter stitch

Size: 3 to 6 months
  1. CO 46 sts.
    Rows 1 and 2: k across all sts
    Row 3: k22, m1, k2, m1, k22 (48 sts)
    Row 4: k across all sts
    Row 5: k22, m1, k4, m1, k22 (50 sts)
    Row 6: k across all sts
    Row 7: k22, m1, k6, m1, k22 (52 sts)
    Row 8: k across all sts
    Row 9: k22, m1, k8, m1, k22 (54 sts)
    Rows 10-12: k across all sts

  2. Cut yarn about 18 inches from end of work. Thread tail on tapestry needle, and insert through rem 9 sts. Pull yarn tightly, closing toe sts tog. With same yarn and needle, seam instep edges tog from toe to beg of BO, using invisible seam for garter st. Don't seam BO edges. Insert needle and yarn to WS, and weave through several sts to secure.

  3. Cut another 18 inches of red yarn, and thread on tapestry needle. Fold bootie in half, and with RS facing, sew back seam tog using invisible seam for garter st. Thread all yarn ends to WS, and weave through several sts to secure.

  4. Use red-and-white ribbon for ties (about 18 inches for each tie), or make a decorative yarn chain out of red and white yarn, such as the 2-color finger cord shown here. Use tapestry needle to weave ties around top of bootie, taking care not to split knitted stitches. Tie ends into bow at front of bootie.

  5. Repeat all steps for matching baby bootie.
Knitting Abbreviations:
  • beg: begin
  • BO: bind off
  • CO: cast on
  • cont: continue
  • k: knit
  • k2tog: knit 2 stitches together
  • m1: make 1 stitch (insert left needle from front to back under horizontal strand between stitch just worked and next stitch on left needle, then knit this strand through back loop)
  • p: purl
  • p2tog: purl 2 stitches together
  • pm: place marker
  • rem: remaining
  • rep: repeat
  • rnd: round
  • RS: right side
  • sl st: slip stitch, unworked, off of one needle to other needle
  • sl st knitwise: slip stitch knitwise by inserting needle as if you were going to knit stitch
  • sl st purlwise: slip stitch purlwise by inserting needle as if you were going to purl stitch
  • ssk: slip next 2 stitches knitwise, then insert tip of left needle into front of these 2 stitches and knit them together
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • St st: stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side)
  • tog: together
  • WS: wrong side
  • [ ]: repeat instructions inside brackets as indicated
