This owl will guard your wizard's most secret Halloween messages.

Make a feathered friend to guard your secret messages.

What You'll Need

  • 6mm craft foam, 2 pieces white
  • Scissors
  • Craft knife
  • Ruler
  • Foam glue
  • 2mm craft foam, 1 piece each: black, gray, light blue, purple, yellow, light turquoise
  • Foam star stickers
  • 2 purple/blue chenille stems
  • Hole punch
  • Paper

Step 1: Downloading and using the Magician's Messenger Owl pdf pattern, cut out large owl shape from 6mm white foam.

Step 2: To make easel, cut a 4X55/8-inch rectangle from 6mm white foam. Score a line with craft knife -- be sure not to cut all the way through -- about 11/2 inches down from narrow end of rectangle, and bend. With scored line facing owl, glue top of easel to middle back of owl shape; be sure bottom of easel is flush with owl bottom. Let dry completely.

Cut out the easel from the white foam.

Step 3: Using the downloaded patterns, cut out feathers, tummy, eyes, beak, hat, and wand from 2mm foam. Glue pieces in place on owl. Attach star stickers to hat and large star to wand tip. Trim stars if needed to fit on hat.

Using the patterns, cut out the owl's wings.

Step 4: Create owl's talons by cutting chenille stems into 6-inch sections. Twist 3 sections together for first 3 inches; leave remaining untwisted. Spread 3 loose ends evenly apart, and curl them around a broomstick handle or taper candle. Punch 2 holes at base of owl where indicated on pattern. Thread twisted ends through a hole going from front to back. Twist ends together above talons to secure. Adjust feet as necessary. Repeat for second talon.

Simply twist chenille stems to make the owl's talons.

Step 5: Write a secret message on paper, roll, and insert it into talons.

And now your messenger owl is almost complete!
