Lobster Craft

The Loony Lobster Craft
The Loony Lobster Craft

How cute is this crustacean? This lobster may have claws, but you won't have to worry about getting pinched when you make this fun lobster craft.

What you'll need:

  • Paper egg carton
  • Red acrylic paint
  • 4 red chenille stems
  • 4 wiggle eyes,10mm
  • Scissors
  • Paintbrush
  • Paper punch
  • Low-temperature glue gun and glue sticks

Note: Adult help needed.

Step 1: Cut the lid and flap off the egg carton; discard. Cut the carton in half lengthwise; discard one half. Cut 2 egg cups off one end so you're left with a body piece made of 4 cups. Cut the 2 extra cups in half, and discard one half. Paint all pieces red. Let dry.

Here is the body of the Loony Lobster.

Step 2: Cut a V shape into each of the 3 half-cups. Punch a hole in 2 of these pieces across from the V (these are the claws). Punch 2 holes in the top of the third piece (this is the tail).

Step 3: Punch 4 holes along each side of the body (see body illustration for placement). Punch 2 more holes near the top of the first cup (the head) and 2 more at the back of the last cup.

Step 4: Thread a chenille stem into one of the side holes on the first cup and out the other side. Thread one end of the stem through each claw (from step 2), and ask a grown-up to help you hot-glue the stems to the claws.

Step 5: Cut the remaining 3 chenille stems in half. Push one piece through each pair of leg holes. Bend each stem into a leg shape. Push another piece through the holes on top of the head so the stem ends are on the outside of the cup. Hot-glue 2 wiggle eyes back-to-back at each end.

Bend the Loony Lobster's legs into shape and glue on the wiggle eyes.

Step 6: To attach the tail to the body, thread the remaining chenille stem piece through the holes on the tail and the holes at the back of the body, and twist the ends together on the inside.

Thread chenille stems through punched holes to attach the tail.

You don't have to stop with the Loony Lobster -- use different bits and pieces of the egg carton to make other animals like a clam or a crab.
