Flittering Butterflies is a challenging craft project for kids, but the results are more than worthwhile. No need to have a drab room anymore! Follow these simple instructions to make a colorful mobile with your kids that will brighten up a corner of your house.

How to Make Flittering Butterflies:

What You'll Need:

  • 1/4-inch Dowel Rod, 13 to 18 inches long
  • Two 1/8-inch Dowel Rods, 7 to 10 inches long
  • Acrylic Paint: Bright Yellow, Fuchsia
  • Craft Foam: Light Blue, Rose, Pink, Turquoise, Purple, Black
  • 6mm Chenille Stems: Azalea, Orange, Orchid, Gold, Pink
  • Fishing Line
  • 1-inch Brass Macrame Ring
  • Saw
  • Sandpaper
  • Paintbrush
  • White Paper
  • Pen
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Tacky Glue
  • 1/8-inch Hole Punch

Step One: Cut the dowel rods to the lengths specified. Sand the ends and paint. For the butterfly, paint the 1/4-inch dowel yellow and the other 2 fuchsia.

Step Two: Trace butterfly patterns onto white paper and cut out. Draw around patterns onto craft foam with the pen. Cut a butterfly wing and 3 detail pieces (butterfly wing dots) from each color of foam. Cut 10 black bodies.

Step Three: Using the hole punch, make 2 holes in the top of each butterfly's head. Cut each chenille stem into a 6-inch length. Fold the stem in half and thread each end through the holes. Bend ends up and coil to form antennas.

Step Four: Lay pieces on a table, arranging and rearranging the detail pieces on the different color wings until you find the combination you like. Glue the pieces in place. Let dry. Turn wings over and glue matching pieces to opposite side. Glue front and back head pieces together to hold the antennas upright. Let dry.

Step Five: Thread a needle with a piece of fishing line about 24 inches long. Stick the needle and thread through the center top of a butterfly, pull the thread through and tie a square knot close to the top. After making sure the knot is tight, cut off the short length of fishing line. Repeat for each piece.

Step Six: Working on a flat surface, lay painted dowels and butterflies where you would like them to hang when the mobile is finished. One butterfly will hang from the center of the large dowel, 2 from each of the smaller ones.

Step Seven: Starting with the center butterfly and the large dowel, tie the butterfly to the dowel with a square knot. Leave a long tail of fishing line at the top of the dowel and tie the macrame ring to it, also with a square knot.

Step Eight: Cut a length of fishing line and tie the smaller dowels to the ends of the large dowel, using square knots. Tie butterflies, using square knots, to the smaller dowels, one from each end. Cut the ends of fishing line off about 1/8 inch from the knots.
