Kids can make picture frames that are enhanced by their own handiwork, and these can also be used to frame mirrors reflecting on their creative success.
- Wooden picture frame, preferably unfinished (found at most craft stores)
- Mirror (optional)
- Sealable plastic baggie
- Food coloring
To make a picture frame (or to frame a mirror) there's lots of routes you can take. One interesting method is to decorate it with colored sand.
Mix sand and food coloring in a sealable plastic baggie, shaking it until the sand has changed color. You can mix and match several different colors in various baggies or stick to a favorite. Set aside, keeping the plastic bags open and ready for the next step.
Next, paint the picture frame with glue, and either sprinkle the sand onto it or arrange the sand into a pattern and carefully lower the frame down until enough has stuck on.
Gently shake off any excess sand and let the frame dry. You can add to the beach theme with pebbles and sand dollars, or glue on other decorations.
