To make the quilt blocks:

Hint: Instead of making your own bias tape in step 3, you may also purchase premade bias tape.

  1. Download and cut out all quilt patterns. Iron fusible webbing to wrong side of all appliqué fabrics. Trace all appliqué shapes on paper side of fusible webbing. Refer to finished quilt illustration below to match shapes to fabric squares.

  2. From green flower print, cut two 51/2-inch squares. From light green print, cut one 51/2-inch square. From light yellow print, cut one 51/2-inch square. From medium to light blue print, cut one 51/2-inch square and one 51/2 X 151/2-inch rectangle. From light blue print, cut one 51/2 X 101/2-inch rectangle. From light tan print, cut one 51/2 X 101/2-inch square.

  3. From 151/2-inch olive green square, cut four 1-inch-wide strips on the bias. If you are using a bias tape maker, follow manufacturer's instructions to fold and press each long side 1/4 inch to wrong side to make 1/2-inch bias strip. If not using a tape maker, use iron to fold and press each long side 1/4 inch to wrong side. Fold and press 2 of the strips in half to make 1/4-inch bias tape. From 151/2-inch dark green square, cut two 1-inch-wide strips. As with olive strips, make 1/4-inch bias tape from both strips.

  4. Make block 1. Trace and cut out sunflower, sunflower center, and 3 leaves. Cut olive green 1/2-inch bias strip 51/2 inches long. Following illustration, pin 1/2-inch bias strip to light blue 51/2 X 101/2-inch rectangle for stem. Cut three 11/4-inch lengths from olive green 1/4-inch bias and pin to blue background, tucking ends under 1/2-inch-wide stem. Stitch stem pieces to blue background with straight stitch along edges, using dark green or black rayon machine embroidery thread. Fuse sunflower and leaves to light blue background, covering raw edges of bias stems. Fuse sunflower center to sunflower. Using blanket stitch and matching rayon machine embroidery threads, stitch around flower, center, and leaves.

  5. Make blocks 2, 4, and 8. Refer to finished quilt illustration above for placement. For block 2, trace and cut out 2 flowers, 2 flower centers, and 3 leaves. Fuse flowers, centers, and leaves to 51/2-inch light green square. For block 4, trace and cut out 2 butterflies. Fuse butterflies to 51/2-inch light yellow square. For block 8, trace and cut out 8 ladybugs. Fuse ladybugs to 51/2-inch green flower square. Blanket stitch around edges of flowers, flower centers, leaves, and butterflies with matching machine embroidery threads. Do not stitch around ladybugs.

  6. Make block 5. Trace and cut out 2 cardinals, 2 beaks, and 2 leaves. Fuse cardinals to 51/2-inch green flower print square. Blanket stitch around edges with red rayon machine embroidery thread. Fuse cardinal beaks to cardinal shapes. Cut 6-inch strip from dark green 1/4-inch bias and pin beneath cardinals. Stitch to background with straight stitch along edges, using dark green or black rayon machine embroidery thread. Fuse leaves and blanket stitch around edges with green rayon machine embroidery thread.

  7. Make block 3. Trace and cut out 2 flowers, 2 flower centers, and 3 leaves. From dark green 1/4-inch bias tape, cut two 1-inch pieces, one 31/4-inch piece, and one 41/4-inch piece. Following finished quilt illustration, pin 1/4-inch bias stems in place on 51/2-inch medium to light blue square. Stitch to background with straight stitch along edges, using dark green or black rayon machine embroidery thread. Fuse flowers and leaves to background, covering raw edges of stems. Fuse flower centers to flowers. Blanket stitch around flower and leaf edges, using matching rayon machine embroidery thread.

  8. Make block 7. Trace and cut out all parts of birdhouse, post, bird, and 6 leaves. Fuse birdhouse pieces, post, and bird to 51/2 X 151/2-inch medium to light blue rectangle. Blanket stitch around edges of birdhouse and bird with matching rayon machine embroidery thread. Cut one 15-inch piece from olive green 1/4-inch bias tape. Pin in place as vine stem. Stitch to blue background with straight stitch along edges, using dark green or black rayon machine embroidery thread. Fuse leaves and blanket stitch around edges, using slightly contrasting rayon machine embroidery thread.

  9. Make block 6. Trace and cut out 2 flowers, 2 flower centers, 2 large leaves, and 1 small leaf. From olive green 1/2-inch bias tape, cut one 41/4-inch piece and one 61/4-inch piece. Pin stems in place on 51/2 X 101/2-inch light tan piece. Fuse leaves to tan background, tucking bottom edges under stems. Blanket stitch around edges, using dark green or black rayon machine embroidery thread. Stitch stems in place with straight stitch along edges, using dark green or black rayon machine embroidery thread. Do not fuse flowers to background yet.
