How to Make Large Quilt

To make the large quilt:

  1. From dark brown and black print, cut six 1-inch squares, six 11/4-inch squares, six 11/2-inch squares, three 2 X 11/2-inch rectangles, two 11/2 X 71/4-inch rectangles, two 2 X 71/4-inch rectangles, one 31 X 13/4-inch strip, and one 31 X 31/2-inch strip. From orange print, cut six 1-inch squares, six 4 X 71/4-inch rectangles, and three 2 X 61/4-inch rectangles. From dark orange print, cut two 3 X 131/2-inch strips and two 3 X 38-inch strips. From tan and medium brown prints, cut two 11/2 X 44-inch strips of each. From dark brown print, cut three 21/2 X 44-inch strips.

  2. Assemble pumpkins. Using template-free angle piecing, stitch 11/2-inch dark brown and black squares to upper outside corners of 4 X 71/4-inch orange rectangles, 1-inch dark brown and black squares to upper inside corners, and 11/4-inch squares to lower outside corners. Make 3 left sides and 3 right sides. Using template-free angle piecing, stitch two 1-inch orange squares to each 2 X 11/2-inch dark brown and black rectangle. Make 3. Assemble 3 pumpkin blocks. Each will measure 9 X 71/4 inches.

    Step 2

  3. Assemble checkerboard border. Stitch 11/2 X 44-inch tan and medium brown strips together lengthwise, alternating colors. Press in one direction. Turn and cut into twenty-four 11/2-inch units. Stitch units together end to end, alternating colors. Count off 2 rows of 31 squares each, beginning and ending with tan, and cut. Count off 2 rows of 11 squares each, beginning and ending with brown, and cut.

  4. Stitch pumpkins to 2 X 71/4-inch dark brown and black strips, with strips between pumpkins. Stitch 11/2 X 71/4-inch dark brown and black strips to outer sides of pumpkin block. Stitch 31 X 31/2-inch dark brown and black strip to top of pumpkins and 31 X 13/4-inch dark brown and black strip to bottom of pumpkins.

    Step 4

  5. Stitch short checkerboard rows to each side of quilt. Press toward quilt. Stitch long checkerboard rows to top and bottom of quilt. Stitch 3 X 131/2-inch dark orange strips to sides of quilt. Press away from quilt. Stitch 3 X 38-inch dark orange strips to top and bottom of quilt. Press away from quilt.

  6. Download and cut out pattern pieces. Iron fusible webbing to wrong side of green fabric. Trace 5 large stars and 12 small stars on paper side of fusible webbing, cut out, and remove paper backing. Arrange on quilt as shown in finished quilt illustration below and fuse.

  7. Layer front, batting, and back; baste. Using white thread, hand quilt on stars along edges. Hand quilt horizontal lines in background, curved lines in pumpkins, and star and leaf shapes in border. Hand quilt in ditches around checkerboard border.
