To make the Bird's Eye View Quilted Wall Hanging Pattern:

  1. Download and cut out scarecrow patterns. Iron fusible webbing to wrong side of white, red, blue, and straw-colored prints. Trace scarecrow patterns onto paper side of fusible webbing and cut out. Remove paper backing and set aside scarecrow pieces.

  2. From medium blue, cut one 71/2 X 191/2-inch rectangle. From light blue, cut one 6 X 191/2-inch rectangle. From light green, cut one 11/2 X 191/2-inch strip. From pig fabric, cut one 2 X 191/2-inch strip. From gold flower print, cut one 21/2 X 191/2-inch strip. From cow print, cut one 21/2 X 191/2-inch strip. From sunflower print, cut one 21/2 X 191/2-inch strip. From dark green flower print, cut one 41/2 X 191/2-inch strip. From black and brown plaid, cut one 31/2 X 191/2-inch strip. From dark green, cut two 11/2 X 321/2-inch strips and two 11/2 X 231/2-inch strips. From dark red plaid, cut two 21/2 X 361/2-inch strips and two 21/2 X 271/2-inch strips. From black, cut three 2 X 44-inch strips. From backing fabric, cut one 31 X 40-inch piece.

  3. Arrange all fabrics representing fields and sky in desired order (see finished quilt illustration below for placement). Do not include black and brown plaid piece. Stitch field and sky pieces together.

  4. Arrange scarecrow pieces on lower left corner of dark green flower print strip. Left arm and lower edge of jacket should extend into lower seam allowance. Fuse pieces in the following order: hand, jacket, face, handkerchief, brim of hat, top of hat. Cut piece of stabilizer larger than scarecrow and pin to wrong side of quilt top under scarecrow. With transparent thread and narrow zigzag stitch, machine stitch around each appliqué piece. Remove fabric stabilizer. Use black marker to outline hat, draw hat brim, and add detail to hand.

  5. Stitch black and brown plaid piece to lower edge of quilt top, including lower edge of appliqué in seam. Press.

  6. To make side borders, fold dark green 11/2 X 321/2-inch border strip in half lengthwise and mark center. Repeat for red plaid 21/2 X 361/2-inch border strip. With centers matching, stitch strips together lengthwise. Ends of strips will not line up. Repeat for other red plaid and dark green strip of same length.

  7. Find center of each dark green 11/2 X 231/2-inch strip and each 21/2 X 271/2-inch red plaid strip. Match centers and stitch each 11/2 X 231/2-inch strip to a 21/2 X 271/2-inch strip to make the top and bottom borders.

  8. Find and mark center of each edge of quilt top. With centers matched, stitch borders to edges of quilt top. See How to Quilt to miter corners.

  9. Layer quilt front, batting, and back and baste. Using transparent thread, quilt in ditches around borders. Quilt straight horizontal lines in black and brown plaid. Quilt diagonal lines radiating outward from scarecrow. See How to Quilt to stitch black binding to quilt.
